Jane has never really had the motherly instinct like her two cousins. Instead, she sees life through a lens and uses her camera as an emotional shield. As a highly successful photographer, Jane travels all over the world, using New York as her home base, especially since her contacts are there also. As the daughter of a general, she has spent her life traveling without making any close friends or setting down any roots. She loves her Grandpa Jed, so when he asks her to help out with the renovation, she can't refuse him. Using her photography, she takes on the task of providing publicity for the ranch, including setting up a website. Although she is not the photographer for her cousin's wedding, Jane is spending two weeks there to get the pictures for the website as well as to be a bridesmaid for the wedding. Living in New York, she has no need to drive. So while she is on the ranch, her grandpa has provided her with an assistant to drive her around and do any heavy lifting for her, etc. But the person he provides is Pete, a man she has had a crush on for some time, although she wouldn't let him in on it.
Pete Brannigan was left with two young children when his flighty wife went off to pursue a modeling career. At first, she had occasionally returned for very short visits, which only left the children upset once more. However, she is quite successful now and has not paid them a visit in over a year. With his young daughter Rachel about to graduate from kindergarten, Pete has trouble explaining to her why her mother won't be attending. After seeing what she is putting his children through, the last thing Pete wants is another woman who will put her career first. So, he does not understand his attraction to Jane, a career minded woman.
As they spend time together and intimacy develops between them, Pete realizes that he is falling in love with her and his children are also growing attached to her. But will he risk his own happiness as well as his children's with a woman who seems to fit the same mold as his ex-wife? Meanwhile, believing that she is helping the children, Jane takes actions of her own, but will her actions destroy any chance at the happiness they might have together?
A heartwarming tale, A RANCHER OF HER OWN, the second book in author Barbara White Daille's THE HITCHING POST HOTEL series, is an emotion-packed, sexy contemporary romance, which is sure to touch the hearts of its readers. I enjoyed watching the romance develop between Pete and Jane as they struggle with the powerful chemistry that keeps pulling them together. The children take the appeal of the novel to a new level, especially Rachel, who suffers from her mother's neglect and wants nothing more than a mother of her own. Her happiness at being included in the wedding activities with the women is so heartwarming while some of her scenes will elicit a giggle or two as she believes she knows what's best for the other children and has no problem expressing it. I also loved Jed's machinations to get his granddaughters married off while still keeping them closer to home.
As a huge fan of Ms. Daille's inspiring, heartwarming novels, I always look forward to her next book. I have never been disappointed by any of her works and this one is no exception as she takes readers from heartache to joy in a small town setting with all the risks, tears and laughter along the way. This story demonstrates once more why Ms. Daille is one of my favorite authors. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy today! Definitely a must read!
