Make Mine Midnight

It’s New Year’s Eve and Claire is attending her neighbor’s party but she isn’t making the rounds or doing the drunken funky chicken on the coffee table.  Nope, she’s taken up her normal position as a wallflower with only her trusty notebook for company.  The notes she takes often find their way into the erotic romances she writes which is somewhat sad since her own sex life is sadly lacking.  One of her resolutions is to ‘sleep with the first non-squicky, non-stalkerish, non-ew-type man to offer’ – not exactly setting her expectations very high so garnering the attention of not one, but two, gorgeous partygoers is just too delicious to resist.

Best friends Mason and Hunter have carried a torch for Claire since high school ten years ago.  It’s only by accident that Mason discovers that the girl he once knew is his new boss’s cute neighbor.  He attends Paul’s party hoping to see Claire again fully aware that she won’t recognize him or Hunter.  They’d been scrawny geeks in high school but their appearances changed drastically after graduation.  Now they’re ready to make their move and Claire doesn’t stand a chance of escape.

People don’t look at Claire, they look through her to someone standing behind her so it’s just idiotic to think that the godlike man, who already has her drooling all over herself, would actually be interested in her.   It’s not until the Adonis is headed her way that she realizes that he’s joined by another man who’s equally beautiful.  All her imaginings are put to rest when the men stop before her requesting that she dance with them.  There’s something familiar about them but she can’t quite put her finger on it – once she discovers who they are she’s already incased in a manwich with no desire to end the evening anytime soon.  Fortunately as midnight approaches Mason and Hunter give her the opportunity to make the New Year very special – and she says yes!

Just when Claire finds the happiness she’s dreamed of with two special men they decide that their plans for her are selfish.  Apparently not everyone is accepting of ménage-a-trois relationships and Mason and Hunter don’t wish to put her through the pain of rejection she’s sure to encounter.  What they don’t count on is Claire having a mind of her own and calling them on their attempt to slink away.

Annmarie McKenna’s MAKE MINE MIDNIGHT is a fantastic read.  The characters and their situation are scorching hot with plenty of emotional overtone to leave readers more than a bit envious of Claire.    Think back, remember that nerdy kid everyone made fun of back in school?  Ever wonder how he/she turned out?  Through her characters Ms. McKenna entices readers to believe that dreams can come true, no matter how long it takes to achieve them.   Claire, Hunter and Mason share a bond that they obviously formed in high school and all the years apart haven’t dimmed their feelings for one another.  Kind of makes me wonder what could have been…
