Ryder understands Summer’s desire to be part of a family but doesn’t believe having a baby is going to achieve that goal for her. Family means having a support system – and becoming a mother means she’ll be the support system, but who would be supporting her when times got rough? Turning her down flat doesn’t appeal to him since he can’t deny that he is attracted to her and doesn’t want her to feel rejected so instead he devises a set of rules for their baby making plot as a way to dissuade her. One of those rules is that there will be no clinical procedures. If she’s going to conceive a child than they’re going to do it the old fashioned way – only he hadn’t expected Summer’s reaction to his edict to be complete horror at the very thought of going to bed with him.
I fell in love with this story right from the beginning. Ryder’s makeshift family is extremely close-knit (closer than many biological families) and I could easily see where their relationship would make Summer a little envious. She’s alone in the world with no one and doesn’t even have a real home. The friendship between Summer and Ryder is sorely tested by this new change in their relationship and stunning secrets will be revealed that have altered the course of their lives but they also made them into the people they are today. Kathie Denosky’s A BABY BETWEEN FRIENDS is a tender and warmhearted story that celebrates family and friendship and how they can lead to emotional healing. As for Summer and Ryder’s attempts at baby making… well, let’s just say sometimes friends make the best lovers.
A BABY BETWEEN FRIENDS is part of Ms. Denosky’s THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE TEXAN series. I checked her website but don’t see any information on future books in this series, but the first title definitely looks like something you’ll want to pick up – I know I will.
