Heather Marshall has an aversion to cops since her alcoholic, controlling father was one. The years of abuse cured her of ever wanting to become involved with one. When she finally was able to escape her smothering home life, she and her sister Kathy started Welcome Home, a shelter for homeless teens and any women needing help. Busy with her work, Heather has no time to devote to any emotional involvement until she is forced to deal with Officer Dave McCoy, a local cop assigned to her area.

Officer Dave McCoy repeatedly has had to bail Heather out of one situation or another due to Heather’s habit of taking her van full of supplies into run-down areas. After one particularly harrowing escape, she is now the target for a vengeful drugged-out brother. Heather has no choice but to accept the assistance of Dave McCoy. The tension mounts as she is also targeted by an unstable police officer who believes she is housing his estranged wife and children. Heather finds her emotions completely out of control. Can Dave keep her safe from a fellow police officer? Is she really willing to give him a chance in her life and forget about her past?

This book was more of a suspense novel which was perfectly fine. Linda Barrett did an excellent job of letting me into the life of Heather Marshall. Heather’s life is like that of many women who have suffered from abuse as a child and Linda portrayed that well.
