James Lapp, injured in an accident, is determined to get out of the wheelchair that he is held captive in.  Against his father's wishes, James reaches out to the Englishers to help him get back on his feet.

Rachel King is James' love and she is to be his wife. She is being pushed away by his actions and he feels he cannot give her the life she deserves because of his injuries.

Rachel tries to show James she is still the same person and still loves him as much now as before, but his stubborn pride stays in the way.  She finds a way to stay in touch with James because he needs someone to take him into town to get the help he needs.  Because his father is against him receiving help, Rachel is the answer.

In the meantime, a runaway girl who is from the Englisher world finds herself hiding in the Lapp's orchard because she is trying to get away from a boy who is not a nice guy.

James finds her hiding in his father's shed where they make maple syrup and he hides her because he knows his father would do something to scare her.

Rachel finds out the girl is in hiding, and after hearing her story, she is also trying to protect her and help her without any of her family knowing about the girl.

This book brings love, compassion, kindness and hope. James hopes to walk again, Rachel is trying to reach him and make him understand she still cares for him, and the future of the runaway is complicated but very hopeful

Rosalind Lauer gives the reader many anixous moments, and lots of adventure in A SIMPLE HOPE.
