Erin, an environmental columnist for the Gazette and aspiring romance novelist, lives her social life through her novels.  When she was young, her mother met someone else and ran off with him, causing
Erin to be against matrimony.  Erin’s father owns Parker Engineering.  Although he is a workaholic, he found time for Erin after her mother left them.  However, his business has had its difficulties.  In fact, Erin sold her condo and BMW, giving the proceeds to her father, who desperately needed the money to save his business.  Now, Parker Engineering is once again in the hole worse than ever, and her father’s health is bad.  He has already had one heart attack.  She needs to obtain a loan to stop her father’s worries and prevent another heart attack.

Lance Dalton, owner of Dalton Industries, spends most of his life at work.  When he was younger, he constantly sought his father’s approval – approval he was never able to obtain.  Now he is about to announce his engagement to Kelly, a female friend.  Though they are not in love, he feels it is time that he wed.  However, their forthcoming marriage is not without its drawbacks.  Lance plans to make the island he bought his home, but Kelly refuses to return there.  She contends that it is haunted.  Lance’s sister Beth also believes Kelly is the wrong type of woman for her brother.  She wants him to find someone to love.

Lance Dalton is a major stockholder in Parker Engineering.  Only a huge disaster could make Erin to go to him for help.  During her background research on him, she heard about his high-handed tactics.  Nevertheless, as bad as things are right now at her father’s company, the best place to start seems to be with Nova Scotia’s wealthiest CEO.  Though Erin’s father advises her not to approach Lance for a loan, Erin cannot resist a challenge.  During a conversation with Lance, Erin tries to shock him by leading him to believe that she sidelines as a prostitute to make extra money.  To her consternation, he finds her candor refreshingly honest, making it impossible for her to tell the truth.

Unbeknownst to Erin, Lance stumbles upon the fact that she is not what she claims.  In the meantime, his actions make it impossible for Erin to get the loan from anyone else and inadvertently cause her father to have another heart attack.  When his fiancée calls off their engagement, Lance offers to make a deal with Erin; he will loan her the three hundred thousand dollars she needs if she becomes his wife and provides him with an heir. Though she is attracted to him, she has sworn that she would never wed and definitely not for money.  On a visit to Lance’s island, Erin stumbles upon a ghostly link to the reason her mother left.  Everything is not as it seems.  Will she find the answers she has been seeking most of her life?  Will Erin change her mind about her vow in order to save her father’s company and possibly his life?

A SPIRITED LIAISON is a steamy hot, energetic contemporary romance.  Containing humor, a feisty heroine, a handsome hero, an interesting plot, appealing secondary characters and a bit of the paranormal, this is a book that will grab the reader’s attention and not let go until the very end.  It has a thoroughly enjoyable and, at times, surprising storyline.  This is the first book I have read by Ms. Carol McPhee and I look forward to reading more by this author.  A SPIRITED LIAISON is a novel that will be interesting to readers of many genres and one that I wholeheartedly recommend.
