Tired of dealing with criminals and murder, Nick Brodie, a homicide detective in Alaska, quit his job. While figuring out exactly what line of work he wants to do now and needing a break, he uses the plane ticket his brother bought him and travels to Las Vegas. Nick isn't looking for a relationship, but he cannot help being fascinated by Samantha. Their time spent together in Vegas is idyllic, but, just like her, he knows that nothing can come of it. His life is in Alaska while hers is in San Francisco.
When Nick returns home, he encounters Jimmy, the young boy who lives nearby. The boy, who just lost his father, believes that his father was killed and he is determined to bring the killer to justice. But Nick chalks Jimmy's beliefs up to the grief of a young boy at first and tries to dissuade him. Meanwhile, unable to get Samantha off his mind, he invites her to Alaska.
It has been three weeks since her Vegas trip and she is unable to forget Nick, especially since her recent discovery that she is pregnant. But before she tells Nick, she must be sure about him. So she accepts his invitation to Alaska and discovers that though she cannot bear the state, her attraction to Nick has not changed. But before she gets a chance to tell him about the pregnancy, they are caught up in a fight with the Russian mob after Jimmy is kidnapped and beaten by two of its members. Nick does not want Samantha involved, but being a whiz at computers, she is equally determined to help. When she becomes the target, will Nick be able to keep her safe, or will he lose the woman he loves? Will their love for each other overcome their logistical problems?
An action-packed tale, AGAINST THE SKY, the second novel in New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin's THE BRODIES OF ALASKA series, is an adrenaline-pumping, sexy contemporary romantic suspense that readers will not be able to put down. Believe me; I tried, promising myself just one more page until I found myself at the end of the book. Nick and Samantha are so compatible, with such undeniable chemistry, that readers cannot help but root for these two to work out a way to be together.
Brimming with danger, suspense, mystery, interesting characters, gorgeous Alaskan scenery, adventure, passion, romance and love, this story is one you do not want to miss! Ms. Martin's wonderfully descriptive prose places the reader right in the midst of the story, bringing it to vivid life. Although this story can be read as a standalone, I am sure that once you finish reading this one, like me, you will seek out the rest, beginning with the first in this series, AGAINST THE WILD, which is Nick's brother, Dylan's, story. The third book, AGAINST THE TIDE, which features Nick's other brother Rafe, is due to release in late May 2015. One warning though: reading these stories may lead to a longing for a Brody of your own. Whatever you do, be sure to pick up a copy of AGAINST THE SKY. It is a definite keeper!
