Bodyguard Jake Cantrell, a former Special Forces marine, has been hired to provide security for S. E. Dumont during the upcoming business negotiations and make sure everyone complied with Middle Eastern protocol. Having spent several years in the Middle East, he was well aware of their customs. What he had not realized when he accepted the job was that S. E. Dumont is actually a beautiful woman named Sage, one who he could steal his heart. Before this assignment, he had been working behind a desk, filling in while his boss was away on his honeymoon. So he is happy to get back out into the field again, even if it will be a struggle to keep his personal and professional lives separate.

Since the age of twelve, Sage Dumont has been raised by her grandfather Ian, the founder of Marine Drilling, CEO and chairman of the board. Now Sage is vice president of acquisitions and distribution for the company. But she had not relied on her close connection to her grandfather for her position. She had worked her way from the bottom up. Currently, she is involved in negotiations with Sheik Khalid Al Khazaz of Saudi Arabia in a transaction that may reach the three hundred million dollar mark. This deal is very important to her. Sage’s idea to buy the used drilling platforms may save their company millions. If she can successfully close this deal, it will prove to her grandfather that she is ready to take over as president when the current president Michael Curtis resigns next year.

At first Sage had not been happy about being forced to accept a bodyguard, but when news of the negotiations hit the local newspaper, she had arrived at work to angry picketers and had been happy to have Jake protecting her. Besides, she knew her grandfather loved her and wanted to protect her, so she would go along with him, even if just being near her bodyguard makes her feel things that she had never felt for her fiancé Phillip Stanton, the vice president of their North Sea drilling operation. She had been dating Phillip for a while and when her grandfather started talking about marriage for her, she had drifted into the engagement. Although she is not in love with her fiancé, they did share mutual interests and ambitions. He is a few years older than Sage and from one of the best families. But soon she begins to question how she can have a future with him when she desires another man and hungers for his touch.

Jake knows better than to mix business with pleasure and has never done so before, but spending time with Sage is sorely testing this resolve. He has advised Sage to get to know the people she is dealing with before the negotiations get started. But soon Jake realizes that something underhanded is going on. After sharing his suspicions with Sage, she decides to prove him wrong by conducting her own investigation. But their investigations soon prove that things are worse than they suspected. Between possible international drug dealings and a bomb, which seems to be meant for Sage, Jake knows he will have to act quickly. Can he stop the culprits, or will he lose the one woman who has come to mean everything to him?
