Josie Sheehan has had more than her share of boyfriends. Unfortunately, they have all been duds with a capital D. She has her beloved dog, Genghis, and her friends. What more could a girl ask for? While standing in line for a contest at Celestial Pet Superstore, to win free grooming for a year, she makes a most unexpected discovery. The man of her dreams is working at the grooming counter! He is handsome, smart, charming, and likes dogs. Josie impulsively gives him her phone number, hoping he will call. But not content to wait for fate to step in, Josie tracks down her man.

Rick Rousseau is definitely startled when Josie shows up at his office, but he is also charmed. There is just something about her smiling face and down to earth appeal that makes him think that getting involved with a woman, after nearly seven years of no involvement, period, that makes him think giving Josie a chance will be worth it. And it definitely is. Josie and Rick connect on all levels. There is laughter, attraction, and happiness in their burgeoning relationship. Rick knows he has to come clean about his past however, especially since his past is about to come knocking on his present in a big, bad way.

AIN’T TOO PROUD TO BEG is the first in a new series from Susan Donovan. Josie and Rick are wonderful characters to spend time with. Josie is finally ready to take her love life by the horns and find a man worthy of her. Any woman will be able to appreciate her attitude. Rick is a complex character with a very different past. It is his big obstacle to overcome because with Josie, he wants to be happy. She brings warmth into his life again and he does not want to lose that.

In addition to the love story, I liked getting to know Josie’s group of dog walking friends. They are definitely quirky characters and will make for interesting stories. Rick’s best friend, Teeny, is also a great addition to this cast.

There is a lot of humor in this book, but also a serious subplot that is crucial to understanding Rick. The more you understand him, the better you will appreciate his new relationship with Josie.

AIN’T TOO PROUD TO BEG mixes humor, suspense, and lots of interesting characters. Susan Donovan has written this story just right!
