Jenna Stevens has just moved back to her hometown in Texas after living in Los Angeles for ten years with her soon to be ex-husband. She used to be a sous chef but she cannot imagine returning to that kind of working environment. She spontaneously signs a lease for a building that she plans to turn into a cooking store, Grate Expectations. Unfortunately, Jenna is not a businesswoman by any means and as she slowly gets the store going, with the help of her new employee and friend, Violet, she realizes that she may be in a bigger pickle than she was before. What if she fails at this, too?
But then out of nowhere, Jenna’s life changes even more when her birth parents suddenly show up. Jenna has chosen never to seek them out, very happy with her adoptive parents and the love and support they have always offered her. Jenna’s birth parents are hippies, just about as different as possible from Jenna’s clean-cut family. With even more changes in her life, and with her heart still damaged by her ex-husband, will Jenna find the strength to welcome these new people into her heart?
Susan Mallery once again tugs on the heartstrings with her new book, ALREADY HOME. There is a great cast of characters that help make Jenna’s desire to see Grate Expectations succeed and who give her new life meaning and hope. In particular, I loved Jenna’s friendship with Violet, a young woman with troubles of her own. They shared center stage in my mind as I read this book. There is so much emotion in ALREADY HOME. Jenna is still getting over the end of her marriage, trying to be successful at a new venture, and determined to see it move forward. She is strong but she has many doubts, which help create intense conflict within this story. There are several burgeoning romances in this story, including one between Jenna and Ellington, a man markedly different from her ex-husband. I dove into this novel headfirst and did not come up for air until I finished. ALREADY HOME is engrossing, warm, and such a companionable book to spend an evening with. Susan Mallery makes every book a new adventure in friendship and joy!
