After a stint in Africa with Doctors Without Borders in her profession as a pediatric surgeon, Sage Anderson, left the medical profession. Suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, she moved to the small town of Eternity Springs and makes her living as an artist. She has gained a following with her paintings of whimsical fairies and butterflies, and she owns the Vistas art gallery. Despite the occasional upset, she gets through her days alright, but her nights are filled with nightmares, driving her out of bed in the middle of the night to exorcise her ghosts by painting powerful scenes in black and red. She does not allow anyone to see these paintings, which she either destroys or keeps hidden. No one is allowed to get a view of her private hell, nor can she speak of it to anyone, including her closest friends. But it is having an effect on her sleep and her friends can see how she is losing weight and bears dark circles under her eyes.

After leaving his teaching career at Georgia Tech, Cole Rafferty used his PhD in chemical engineering to get a position in the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazards Board, figuring he could make a difference in this job with the government. However, he can see that after three years in this position, he is not making a difference at all. After a recent outburst at work, he was given two weeks off and decided to spend it at Eternity Springs, where he used to go during the summers when he was teaching and at college. An artist in his own right, he carves wood in his spare time. One of his woodcarvings recently won a contest over one of Sage’s paintings, which upset her greatly since she likes to win. Besides, the contest had only been for locals and Cole was not residing in Eternity Springs at the time.

Cole and Sage are attracted to each other right off. Although Sage will not let anyone get really close, she is alright with their long distance relationship. In fact, their time spent together helps her; she is even able to sleep. However, when he quits his job and moves to Eternity Springs, she begins withdrawing. Unbeknownst to her, Cole sees her middle of the night paintings, which leaves him with a stronger determination to help her, although he also wishes he had never seen these powerful paintings as they give a glimpse of the horror she holds inside. However Cole has strong feelings for her and is willing to do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of the problem that is slowly destroying her. Will she give him a chance to show her that he is there for her? Can the healing powers of Eternity Springs work for them as it has for others?

A wonderful read, reminiscent of Robyn Carr’s VIRGIN RIVER series, HUMMINGBIRD LAKE, the second book in author Emily March’s ETERNITY SPRINGS series, is an emotion-packed, contemporary read that I hated to see end. Celeste, who owns the new healing center, collects angels and is one of Sage’s best friends, seems to be the backbone of the small town. Strange things happen as she seems to provide spiritual guidance to the residents of Eternity Springs. Although Sage does not always show it, she is secretly thrilled by Colt’s attention, but she feels that she is too damaged to be involved with anyone. Talented author Emily March brings this story to life right before your eyes with her heartwarming plot, complex and compelling characters, witty banter, tension and romance, as she reaches for your heart and touches it. Readers of the first novel in this series, ANGEL’S REST, will also be delighted to revisit those characters as they read HUMMINGBIRD LAKE. The author’s handling of PTSD was handled well, as she clearly shows Sage’s struggle to overcome this debilitating disorder. This can be read as a stand-alone, but why deprive yourself when you can get additional enjoyment by reading the series. As I eagerly await the next book in this series, HEARTACHE FALLS, be sure to get your own copy of HUMMINGBIRD LAKE and pick up a copy of ANGEL’S REST while you are at it. You won’t regret it!
