A recent widow, Colleen is afraid she is losing her son.   The loss of her husband has opened the floodgate of memories; a promise she made to her husband Hal twenty years ago now seems to want to be set free.   With her son’s announcement to join the military Colleen makes the decision to travel with Jamie to Ireland where the secrets both have kept hidden will come to light and maybe a few dreams will come true as well.   Will this trip bring mother and son closer together or will it sever the fragile bonds forever?

AN IRISH CHRISTMAS is a well crafted story of family secrets and internal struggles that challenge the human spirit.   The cast is a strong ensemble; the characters are realistic and full of human flaws.  Colleen and Jamie are so genuine they feel remarkably like family.   I was soon captured by Colleen's fears of losing her son to his music and the military, her fears of being alone and her life spinning out of control.   Devoting herself as a wife and mother for so many years, she has lost touch with who Colleen is and the journey to finding her identity is a poignant one.   Jamie's bid for independence is a vivid reminder to all parents that children make decisions we often don't agree with.  His journey toward adulthood is realistically presented and endeared me to his character all the more.   Melody Carlson has penned a good solid story that will capture the hearts of many this holiday season.
