Allyson Roy bursts on the scene with a wonderfully original and extremely well-written suspense thriller in APHRODISIAC.

Diminutive sex therapist, Dr. Saylor Oz, feels she is capable of dealing with grief when her oldest and best friend is fished out of the river.  Her only problem is that the events are just not adding up.  Gwen Applebee’s apparent suicide is just too uncharacteristic and neat.

First, there’s the fact that the fashion savvy Gwen was wearing a fanny pack with all her identification in it when her body was recovered.  Second, Gwen’s star as an archaeobotanist specializing in perfumes is hovering on the rise.  Third, there was the suicide note written in the code they had devised as children.

It all added up to the wrong number for suicide to Saylor.  Deciding to dig a little deeper after her apartment is burglarized, she uncovers a plot that could go all the way up to the major pharmaceutical firms.

Gwen had hit the jackpot with the discovery of a clay tablet with the ingredients for an aphrodisiac dating back thousands of years.  One that was selective and only activated by a woman – and only with a man she was attracted to.  Had her discovery gotten her killed when she had refused to sell it?

It was up to Saylor and their best friend, Benita, to follow the trail to see just how deep Gwen had gotten herself before her murder.

APHRODISIAC is a ride that will have the reader on the edge of their seat.  Saylor Oz is not only delightfully sarcastic, but she is a heroine for the modern age.  Fearless, assertive, and unashamed to dance to her own music, she doesn’t take the easy answers.  The reader will empathize with her motivation, laugh at her mishaps, cry with her tears, and be totally caught up in the complex plot.

Allyson Roy is a husband and wife writing team that has managed to capture the best in both men’s and women’s fiction and wrap it up in a masterpiece.  Very well done.  This reviewer can’t wait to see their next one.
