APPEALED is a nice continuation of the series, since we see where characters we've previously met are in their lives and what's happened since we last saw them. There is one twist after the other that kept me on my toes, but the vast number of sexual encounters and innuendo along with the swearing--even in front of the kids or directed toward them--did not seem necessary and took me out of my comfort zone. The story at times seemed almost as if it was an aside.
When it's revealed how Kennedy was bullied and picked on by her high school classmates at a prestigious private school, it pulled at my heartstrings. No one should have to live through what Kennedy did--the ridicule, backstabbing, pranks, lies and meanness. Brent, her next door neighbor and best friend growing up, ignored what happened to her, not knowing how extensive the abuse was and wished now that he had taken a stand. He tries to make up for lost time, but sometimes it's best to just move forward and not look back.
Kennedy and Brent open up to each other as time goes on. When they're not burning up the sheets, they talk about what's going on in their lives and in their careers. They connect both intellectually and as friends, and we get to know them on a deeper level and not just what they show to the outside world. That's what kept me turning the pages for more.
APPEALED has law and lawyers at its core. Along with the court cases, the author shows us meddling moms and dads, best friends, family, and all the love and heartache that goes along with a good romance. Both Kennedy and Brent have support systems in their friends, if not their parents, who seem to have their own agenda where their kids are involved. The two epilogues gave nice closure and tied up the loose ends. The happily ever after was not front and center but seemed to be more in the background like Brent and Kennedy wanted it to be.
I need to read the first book in the series, OVERRULED, to fill in some of the blanks, but it helped that I have read book two in the series, SUSTAINED. Chase is a fairly new to me author and I look forward to reading the novella, SIDEBARRED, coming out soon.
