Sam Truelove is a prominent heart surgeon about to perform delicate surgery when the devastating news comes of his daughter's drowning death. Instead of allowing another doctor to take his place, Sam makes the decision to continue the operation. However, something goes horribly wrong and the young girl is left in a coma. Sam throws himself into his work even more and neglects his wife Annie at the time when she needs him the most.

Annie Truelove was a newspaper reporter at the Asheville Tribune on the day her daughter drowned. She had been doing an interview when her husband had gotten the call to do emergency surgery on a young accident victim. Sam had called his mother, Mary, to watch Margaret until Annie could pick her up, and during naptime Margaret had awoken and snuck outside to the creek. Unable to find her right away, Mary realizes her worst nightmare has come true when she discovers Margaret facedown in the water.

Sam and Annie separate when they can't come to grips with their daughter's death, and they begin new lives apart thousands of miles away from each other. Five years later, the news of the impending death of the coma victim makes national headlines, causing Sam to resign his position. He decides to return to his hometown until things blow over. Hearing the same news miles away, Annie heads back home to see if there is anything she can do to help the situation instead of continuing on to Los Angeles to her new job. Also, having just recently filed for divorce from Sam, she decides to clean out her things from the house she had departed from five years earlier, leaving everything behind. Is there any hope for them when they meet up again in North Carolina, or is the final death blow about to be made to their marriage?

Linda Nichols has written an emotionally gripping novel that will have you reaching for the tissues and praying for a happy ending. Two broken souls are lost and wandering in search of that elusive "something" that will make them whole again, not realizing what they are really searching for is God and each other. Ms. Nichols takes seemingly unconnected characters and connects the dots between them to complete the beautiful portrait that ends up being the novel AT THE SCENT OF WATER. The strong Christian message of faith and hope is one that uplifts the hearts of its readers and reminds them of God's unending grace. I highly recommend this keeper-shelf addition if you are looking for a straightforward read of emotional impact on your heart.
