Maddy doesn't sleep well and is afraid of the dark, so when the intruder enters her hotel room, she hears him and manages to slip out of the bed before he can kill her. She stabs him with a pencil and flees down the hall.
Sam McCabe believes a series of killings are the work of a serial killer. When he tries to interview Maddy, she's not at all interested in cooperating. Sam is as determined to help her as she is avoiding his help.
Maddy and her associate get the advertising deal they want and are followed back to St. Louis. Sam sets up a rotational schedule for Maddy to be guarded and she balks at every turn.
Little by little, sparks of a different kind ignite between Maddy and Sam, leading them into places they' re not sure they should venture.
Interwoven into the mystery is a dog named Zelda. Before the final agreements were made in the negotiations to win over the dog food company president, the suggestion was made to have the dog become the spokesdog and cover model of the campaign. Zelda must travel to St. Louis in order to accomplish this. To say that she's uncooperative to just about everyone is an understatement. She and Maddy work very well together.
The story will keep you on the edge of your seat and Zelda will steal your heart in the process.
BAIT is another hit for Karen Robards. If you love romantic suspense and a story with lots of twists and turns, you' ll love her books and this one is no exception. It's a highly recommended read and a definite keeper. I've been a fan of Karen's for as long as she's been publishing novels and they just keep getting better and better.
