Claire Truman is tired of struggling to make ends meet at her current job at Peters and Pomfret, a top New York publishing house.  Although she loves the people, she feels like she is stuck, especially when her mentor decides to retire and spend time with his grandkids.  With no backup, Claire sees her dream of being a top editor slipping away.  As if that isn't enough, she just broke up with her loser boyfriend.  To get out of this funk, her best friend, Bea, decides to drag Claire out to a gallery opening where Claire's luck is about to change.  She sees her old college crush, Randall Cox, and is surprised and flattered that he remembers her.  When he decides to float her name to a rival publishing house, Claire thinks she is on the high road to happiness with a new job and boyfriend.  However, Claire is about to find out that living the dream isn't always what it seems.

BECAUSE SHE CAN is an interesting story of personal and professional growth.  Claire felt like she was in a rut when she decides to take a chance with Grant books and their founder, Vivian Grant.  She had dreams of being a high-powered editor but she never expected to be working with a tyrant.  Yet through the chaos, she meets Luke, an aspiring writer who reminds her that she can follow her dreams but on her terms.  He doesn't push or mold her into becoming someone else.  Randall, her college crush, is her ideal man.  He is successful and rich but also likes to be with her.  Yet he also is a dreamer trying to find something to complete his own life.  Whether Claire finds her happiness with Randall or Luke, she sure learns that the road to success isn't always a walk in the park.  The secondary characters are larger than life, from the crazy boss to Claire's soon-to-be mother-in-law.  They may seem over the top at times but they provide flair and substance to the story.  I enjoyed reading BECAUSE SHE CAN because it made me realize that I'm glad I didn't have a boss like Vivian Grant.  To survive her is to be nominated for sainthood!
