Jail Sergeant R. J. "Ram" Ramsey is upset that he has been passed over for promotion because he doesn't have a college degree. What makes it worse is who is being promoted. Isabel "Belle" Buchanan is beautiful, smart and completely by the book. Ram went out with the woman a couple of times two years ago, when he was in the middle of a messy divorce. His strong feelings for Belle confused him, and he bowed out of her life.

Now Belle is back in his life as his superior. In a single night, she both humiliates Ram in front of his men and reveals that she has lingering feelings for him as he does for her. When they tour an abandoned part of the jail and Belle shows an interest in devices once used to restrain prisoners, things start to get really interesting.

BELLE BEHIND BARS is a contemporary novella with some light bondage and submission themes. Belle agrees to explore both the feelings she and Ram share and also her interest in bondage. She submits to Ram the next evening in Ram's bedroom. By putting herself in Ram's hands, Belle experiences a passionate night of sex. But both of them are also able to move beyond their past history to talk about a future together.

Ms. Daniels depicts both Belle and Ram as strong characters that don't let past hurt stand in the way of their present happiness. In a delightful paradox, it is their experimentation in bondage that allows Ram and Belle the freedom to talk about what happened to them two years ago. It is to the author's credit that we want to see the characters work through their history and their feelings for each other as much as we want to see their passion for each other.

BELLE BEHIND BARS is in turn tender and spicy, juicy and emotional. It is a very delightful read.
