Between his skill and size, Major John ‘Bear’ Midwinter, a U.S. Army ranger, is a natural warrior. Although he did not feel that he owed his mother anything, he had returned to his hometown of Hydrangea to ready his mother’s dance studio and apartment for sale. Bear does not even know his father’s name. His mother had been a gifted ballet dancer in New York when she got pregnant with him and every day she let him know how he had ruined her life, body and career. The happiest day in his life was when he left home to go to college. But now he has hopes that she may have changed and hopes they can build a relationship while he is back in town. However, when he arrives, she is just leaving for the airport and a trip to Paris, leaving everything up to him.
Veda Hayes is tiny and she had been young when she knew Bear so he had given her the nickname Tiny Dancer since she took ballet lessons from his mother. After her dream of joining an international ballet tour was dashed by one too many stress fractures, she decided to purchase the studio owned by Bear’s mother. Now that he is back in town, she sees that he is even bigger and handsomer than she remembered. Seeing him again makes her insides melt, but then he had always had that effect on her. All of the girls had had a crush on teenage Bear, but he had held her twelve-year-old heart in the palm of his giant hand. When she heard he was returning to town to help his mother, all of those old feelings had sprung back to life. But that is the last thing she needs to feel when she is in the midst of rebuilding her life and starting a new business.
As the divorced women in town begin to come on to Bear, he gets Veda to pretend to be his girlfriend. But this act soon becomes all too real. Do they have a chance at a future together, or will he leave her behind when he finishes the renovations?
In this delightful story, author Rhonda Nelson takes a friendship between two childhood friends and a secret crush and turns it into a forever after love. In THE STEADFAST HOT SOLDIER, readers cannot help but have empathy for Bear’s relationship with his mother and his vulnerable childhood. I found myself rooting for Bear and Veda to get together. These two seem to be meant for each other. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Nelson’s work.
WILD THING by Tawny Weber
Lately, Private Investigator Percy Graham seems to be on a losing streak, including the woman he has been unable to forget. After spending a passionate night with her, he awoke to find her gone. Since then he has not been able to reach her. She will not even answer his phone calls or respond to his messages. He has decided to take a break from trying to drum up customers and to put off the thought of taking on a partner. Getting ready to fly off on a vacation, he agrees to take on a last minute assignment. A client is in the middle of a custody battle with his ex-wife over their Chinese Crested dog known as Medusa. He claims to have custody of the dog, but his ex-wife refuses to relinquish her. But now that Medusa is at the groomers, it is the perfect time to retrieve her. After all, it should not take long to stop at the upscale ‘Fur’sace Salon, pick up the dog, return her and be on his way.
Andrea Turner, who owns the ‘Fur’sace Salon, has been trying to forget her night of passion with Percy. Being curvy, she believes her svelte sisters are much more beautiful than she is. So after their night together, she had taken one look at him and realized that she could never hold onto a man like him. She had seen the way other women wanted him and figured he probably had a harem. So she had bolted.
Arriving at the salon, Percy heard strange noises and found the woman of his dreams tied to a chair and gagged. Releasing her, he discovered that a thug had taken the dog that Percy was supposed to pick up. He agrees to go after the criminal, but Andrea insists on going with him. After all, the dog had been taken while in her custody. As they search together for the dog, Percy is given a chance to show her how much he cares for her. Will he be able to win her, or will she continue to give him the cold shoulder?
