BOOTS ON THE GROUND takes place in a small town in Kansas with Lauren and her prominent family front and center along with Grady, a hurting ex-military man who is now a civilian trying to put down roots for the first time in his life as well as renovate the home he bought and keep a steady job. There are lots of twists and turns to the story that have me rooting for both Grady and Lauren to get their act together!
Crowley's BOOTS ON THE GROUND (HOMEFRONT #1) has a lot packed into its one hundred and twenty six pages along with a well formulated beginning, middle and end. The characters are multifaceted and have a lot of issues to deal whether Grady and his army buddies, Ethan, his former captain, and Chance or even Lauren who has it all or so it seems but is still restless and wants something more than to live in the town she grew up in. Her family surprises her and after long talks with Grady she's wonders if he's right in some of his statements. Watching their give and take and heart to heart talks was heartwarming at times and other times heart wrenching. There were family and friends, fear, anger, troubles, sorrow, loss, sadness, memories, people from opposite sides of the tracks, laughter, happiness, hope and ultimately love. There is some closure and a happily ever after in the offing but an epilogue would have been nice since the story ended too abruptly for my liking. I'm hoping that the next book in the series will pick up where this one left off.
Crowley is a new to me author. I will definitely be looking for more of her romances including books two and three in this series, ALIVE DAY and THUNDER RUNNING, respectively
