Eighty-one-year-old Mitzi has loved her singing partner husband, Gabe, for over sixty years. Now with Gabe in the late stages of Alzheimer’s, Mitzi finds herself struggling with what to do with the imminent loss of her beloved soul mate. Believing God had a hand in her meeting Brooke at the hospital, Mitzi invites the young woman to move into her home and takes her under her wing. They soon have a close friendship with Mitzi teaching Brooke about true love and with Brooke giving Mitzi a reason to keep living once Gabe has passed on. Then when Mitzi’s godson, Drew Caprice, comes for a short visit to finish his pediatric internship, a spark ignites between him and Brooke. Has Brooke found the meaning of true love?
BROKEN WINGS by Carla Stewart is simply one of those books that you don’t want to end, but when it does, you breathe a sigh of contentment at how well the story wraps up. While only her second book, with CHASING LILACS being her debut, BROKEN WINGS is written so well readers will think it was penned from a seasoned author’s hand. The heart-breaking story of Gabe and Mitzi’s fight with Alzheimer’s and the devastating effects of domestic abuse of Brooke by Lance are handled exceptionally well by Ms. Stewart. Faith and friendship are steady themes throughout this novel, and the Christian theme is present without being preachy. With characters that readers will quickly come to care about and a storyline that grabs your attention from the very first page, BROKEN WINGS is a rare treasure. This is inspirational fiction at its best!
