Luc Baker is in a career crisis. He has taken one hit too many in his hockey career and his head cannot handle another concussion. He does not think his life can get any worse but then an invite to his father’s wedding shows up and Luc’s life takes yet another nosedive. His father is an elderly man and Luc does not have fond memories of him at all. Luc’s feelings towards his father’s fiancée, Tara Jean Sweet, are anything but good. He is sure she is a gold digger out for his father’s money. Luc just wants off the ranch and back to his comfortable world of hockey but he is starting to feel like that life is in the past.

Tara Jean Sweet may have led a varied, troubled life, but she has finally found a home at the ranch. She’s even willing to buy into Lyle Baker’s mad scheme to get his son and daughter back to the ranch. But she will not be bullied by Luc; she will not let him put her down. Tara finally has a life she will fight for and she is not going to let an arrogant hockey player ruin it. But what will happen when Luc’s misconceptions about her are cleared up and he is ready for something more for Tara? Will she be ready to put her heart on the line?

CAN’T BUY ME LOVE is an apt title for this book because both Tara and Luc have had to face a life where love never comes easy and always at a cost. Tara Jean is happily settled into a life she enjoys and that fulfills her. She gets to create leather designs for Lyle’s company and she is truly talented at it. On the other end of the spectrum is Luc, whose career is ending and he does not know how to deal with it. These two butt heads but also discover that they have more in common than they believe. They are both dedicated and hard working, love their jobs and care for the people around them. Luc in particular is a hard guy to crack because he is truly kind of rude to Tara at first. However, as the story continues, his sweetness comes out as he shows Tara how much he has come to care for her, even if she is not ready to accept it. Molly O’Keefe has written a great character in Tara. She is a woman with a troubled past but she is a woman with a great heart and I really liked her genuine sweetness. Luc has a very difficult decision ahead of him in regards to his career, but with Tara by his side, well, he just became a better man.

CAN’T BUY ME LOVE surprised me with how much I liked it. It had more depth than I expected, much like Tara Jean Sweet herself! Molly O’Keefe builds a passionate and compelling romance!
