Luke MacKenzie is a cop turned homicide detective from Massachusetts. He is of average build, tall and brown haired with a handsome face. He is sent to Sugar Maple to investigate the death of his friend Suzanne Marsden. He is drawn to Chloe though he will not admit it. Strange things happen every time he and Chloe are near to one another.
Sugar Maple appears to be your average small town with no crime for the past eighty years and it's paranormal residents, who because of the charm over the town appear as normal people. Luke arrives in town sooner than expected which puts Chloe into a minor frenzy because of the empty shop next door which is to be his office for the next six months. The shop stinks so badly it was to have gotten the cleaning through magic but now his early arrival changes that. When they shake hands in greeting silver sparks fly every where, Chloe claims it’s only static electricity. Chloe must be on her toes to keep Luke from discovering the truth about their town. Chloe is attracted to Luke and seems drawn to him like a magnet collects metal pieces. She blames herself for Suzanne’s death as she is the last descendant of her line, she must get her powers before things get worse. Luke gets a list of people to contact about Suzanne’s death from Chloe who has his temporary office in the back room of the Sticks and Strings. Luke is attracted to Chloe but he has a job and that must come first, or so he believes. Will Luke discover the truth of Suzanne’s death, his feelings for Chloe and why sparks fly every time they touch?
CASTING SPELLS was a very good read. I enjoyed unraveling the mysteries within. I couldn’t wait to discover the answers to the questions I had like “Did Chloe get her powers, what is the reason for the sparks between Luke and Chloe and finally was Suzanne murdered?” Of course I’m not going to tell, it would spoil Ms. Bretton’s story. If magic and mystery are your favorite things then this book is for you. There is a realism to the book that I liked.
