Brooklyn Douglas, a divorced mother with a teenaged son, has a marvelous group of people who more than take care of her.  This novel opens in quite a comical way with
Brooklyn and her four closest friends sharing a delightful meal along with wonderful companionship.  They are in the midst of their yearly weekend away; a time for each of them to catch up with details about their lives, loves, and family.  Unfortunately for Brooklyn, this is also a time when they take the opportunity to try to give her love life a much needed makeover with firm suggestions.

As if on cue, a tall, dark, and strikingly handsome man, Isaiah Washington, enters the restaurant.  His eyes immediately settle longingly upon an unsuspecting Brooklyn.  Even though he has promised himself he will never love again because of the pain involved, there is something that draws him to the face of this beautiful stranger.

All it took was one smile and one of the most intimate gazes she ever experienced and Brooklyn was totally smitten.  Of course, she would never admit it openly to her friends.  She had vowed to never give her heart freely ever again after the deceit of her ex-husband and her best friend who left her world in a state of utter chaos.

Through the mysteries of fate, Brooklyn and Isaiah are brought together again, on that same night.  She decides to take the advice of her dear friends; one night of pleasure, no questions asked, and then say goodbye.  At least that is the agreement Brooklyn has decided upon. It’s quite questionable for Isaiah.

As their passion fills the night, it is as if they have always known each other.  Their kisses are a memory of something most exquisite; the way their bodies move to the seductive music that only they can hear is nothing short of sublime.  They are a magical symphony through sighs, grazing fingers, and the final crescendo – the euphoric climax.

As much as Brooklyn would like to forget about Isaiah, he becomes a constant thought during her days.  Her dreams take her back to that one night and leave her wanting much more of this delicious man.  Isaiah, though, is hurt because of the way Brooklyn left him during the night.  She never said goodbye nor left a note to say she was leaving.  He wondered how she could have done such a thing to him.

Is it possible that love has a way of keeping two people connected even though they live so far apart?  We all know life has so many unexpected twists and turns.  Novels travel along the same path, also.  Just when you think there is no hope of finding that one true love, something happens to bring the magic back into your heart.  If love is meant to be, somehow it finds a way.  It’s all about the chances you take.

COMFORT OF A MAN is filled with a myriad of emotions.  Some are recognizable because they have been lived.  Ms. Byrd has assembled a wonderful grouping of people and has told a tale filled with humor, sadness, love, and hope.  Thank you, Ms. Byrd, for sharing your imagination with us.  It is with great anticipation that I await your next piece, Unforgettable in April 2004.
