Courtney Stone wakes up one morning, not in her normal but disappointing life in twenty-first century Los Angeles, but in the early nineteenth century of Regency England. She is surrounded by people who are strangers to her, but they seem to know her quite well. Courtney wonders if this situation has been precipitated by her immersion into her favorite Jane Austen novels and too much vodka in an effort to deal with a broken engagement. Courtney realizes she has been dumped into the life of a thirty year old single woman with a mother who is desperate to get her married. Courtney is able to blend in and not be a "fish out of water" thanks to her addiction to Austen novels.
Courtney soon discovers that Regency England may have had a more relaxed lifestyle for those of the privileged class, but there are things that are not discussed in classic novels such as dealing with chamber pots, bad hygiene habits of the general population and many double standards.
Courtney wants to get back to her real life, but if she is trapped in an unfamiliar life she may as well make the best of it. Who knows, she may find a dashing a suitor worthy of a Jane Austen fan.
Author Laurie Viera Rigler is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America and readily admits at being obsessed with both the six books that Jane Austen wrote as well as all the movie adaptations. This addiction gives an authentic air to the setting and dialog of this captivating novel.
Jane Austen has been popular with readers for almost two hundred years thanks to her ability to create timeless characters and themes. Recently, there seems to have been a new resurgence of all things Austen with several Austen themed novels and a new movie, "Becoming Jane". CONFESSIONS OF A JANE AUSTEN ADDICT is a worthy addition to this growing collection of Austen based material.
