Four women get to know each other during yoga class, but soon they find they have much more in common than stretching and bending exercises. As they begin to get together for dinner and drinks every Thursday night, they also start to get to know one another and learn that they're each struggling with a crisis of some sort. There is Blair, the housewife whose husband is having an affair; Lauren, VP of a company, wife, mother and all around burnt-out superwoman; Madison, a carefree fun-loving girl who has a reputation for sleeping around, and finally, there's LaShawn, the born-again religious virgin whose insistence on celibacy is quickly driving her fiancée away.
Together, the women make a pact not to stand by and watch as their lives unravel. So they take matters into their own hands and book a cruise. The goal? To see who can have the most sex. But is it really all about getting physical with strangers, or will the independence and freedom they discover prove to be the key to finding what each woman has been missing?
Sometimes, the personas we present to the world aren't as put together as we'd like everyone to think. That's the lesson Ms. Day delivers in CRUISING, and it's one that will resonate with female readers everywhere. The four heroines of the novel are interesting and different from one another, which makes it easy to keep them separate, even though they all have very involved histories and problems. As the story progresses, the friendship between the women becomes the anchor each one needs to find her way to shore -- and to a fulfilling, happy life.
CRUISING is the story of what happens when friends decide to be there for one another while searching for that elusive key to happiness. Women will be able to relate to at least one of the characters, and every reader will recognize some of her friends in the other protagonists. Overall, this is a fun book with some genuine humor and tear-jerker moments, written in a genuine African-American voice.
