CRYSTAL LIES takes the reader on a journey through the addiction, rehabilitation, relapse, and recovery of a teenager as seen through the eyes of his caring mother. Glennis struggles with the knowledge she may not be able to save her son, even at the cost of her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, and her sanity. This is an emotional, heart-breaking novel, but one that also offers hope and encouragement for the addict and the people who struggle with the painful desperation and devastation of drug addiction. Melody Carlson writes with the knowledge of personal experience, as noted in the preface of this book, and it shows with descriptive phrases chosen to portray a mother’s tenacity to rescue her son from the drug’s clutches. Definitely not for the faint of heart, CRYSTAL LIES is more a novel of hope than a romance, but not one that should be passed over. I was shown a glimpse into a world too many people have experienced and one I won’t soon forget.
