Cade Revlin couldn’t believe it when he saw Annie back in town. He had a terrible crush on her when his older brother dated her in high school and Cade still has feelings for her. Now is his chance to spend time with Annie but there’s so many bad feelings involving her sister and his brother that the chance of her staying in town is slim. Cade only has a few days to convince Annie that they belong together.
CUPCAKES AND CRUSHES is the first release in the new contemporary romance series, TURTLE PINE, by Keri Ford. It’s a fun and entertaining start. I admit the blurb for this sweet small town romance caught my attention immediately and I can truthfully say I wasn’t disappointed in the plot or character development. I can’t wait to see what happens in this town next.
Aside from the aforementioned plotting and character development, there are lots of other things about this well written story that kept my attention. I particularly enjoyed the detailed world building. The vivid imagery that Ms. Ford used brought the town of Turtle Pine to life, almost making me believe it was a real place. I found the pace steady throughout and with it there is a nice balance—pain vs. love and affection, loyalty vs. betrayal, and family drama mixed in with fun.
The romance between Cade and Annie is balanced nicely against Annie reuniting with her family. There’s lots of pain from the past that colors Annie’s reactions to Turtle Pine and definitely puts a wrench in a relationship with Cade, but their attraction and mutual background firmly draws them together. Ms. Ford also deftly tackles the painful split between the sisters. What started out as a mess between them in the beginning is at least partially healed at the end. Aside from the I-know-better-than-you attitude of Annie’s grandmother, I really don’t have much in the way of complaints and I will be watching for the next release in this new series. I hope you enjoy CUPCAKES AND CRUSHES as much as I did.
