THE LINE OF DUTY - book 2 in the FIRST RESPONDERS series - is a contemporary romance that packed a lot into just over one hundred pages.  The story is realistic and flows nicely and reeled me in from page one.

Alward's IN THE LINE OF DUTY has multifaceted characters that she reveals to us little by little as she peels back their layers.  As I got to know their fears, their sorrows and why they act the way they do I got the whole picture of each one. Watching the give and take between Kendra and Jake was sometimes frustrating but mostly endearing as they learned to let go and embrace what could be.  Both were afraid to love but seeing them work through their fears together was awesome.  There were friends, family, their jobs, some laughter and sadness and ultimately romance and love. There was closure thanks to the epilogue and I look forward to meeting up with them and their friends and coworkers again.

I have now read books 1, 2 and 4 in the series.  Up next is book 3, INTO THE FIRE, which I look forward to reading so I can reunite with the characters I've met before.  Alward writes heartwarming stories with just the right amount of heat!
