Ex-Army sergeant Abby Malloy never knew her father Ezra. Wanting a son, he believed that if a woman's first child is a girl, the woman's later children will all be girls. So he left Abby's mother after discovering that she had given him a daughter. Now, notified of his death and curious about the man, Abby attends his funeral and meets his other two daughters, Abby's half-sisters. Having no son to inherit his ranch, Ezra stipulates in his will that the three women must live together on the ranch for a year. If any of them leave before the year is up, the one leaving will give up any right to the ranch, but will still receive her third in the  money coming to them. The last of the girls remaining at the end of the year would inherit the ranch, the cattle and the house. If none of them stick it out, the ranch reverts to his ranch hand, Rusty. Abby is not sure if she wants anything of Ezra's, but she figures she will stick around for a while, at least until Spring. At thirty years old, Abby has spent twelve years in the Army and is now out. Always a sucker for a man in uniform, Abby cannot keep her eyes from straying to the handsome sheriff, even in the midst of this somber occasion.

Having lost his own parents at a young age, Cooper Wilson, the local sheriff, had been raised by his grandparents. Cooper also owns the ranch neighboring Ezra's. Seeing Abby and not understanding his desire for her, Cooper figures she will be out of there as soon as she can, so nothing can come of the attraction between them. With each having differing plans for the future, they try to slow down the romance between them, but the heat between them becomes too powerful to be denied. Thrown into each other's company and working seven days a week, with only a few chores on Sunday, the three women alternate cooking and household chores as they learn ranching. These duties, plus getting accustomed to living together, keep the half-sisters busy. But this doesn't keep Abby's memories of her time in Afghanistan from haunting her or prevent her mind from wandering to the hunky sheriff. With Cooper taking dinner with them each night, the two soon find time to explore their feelings for each other. But Cooper cannot help wondering if she will stay, or will she leave at the first opportunity, breaking his heart in the process?

A heartwarming tale, DAISIES IN THE CANYON, the second book in author Carolyn Brown's PALO DURO CANYON series, is an emotion-packed, sexy contemporary romance that is sure to touch hearts. I enjoyed the interaction between the half-sisters, along with their barbs and bantering as they get acquainted.  There are touching scenes as well as humorous ones as the women adjust to living with siblings they never knew they had. There are also three dogs that Ezra named after his three ex-wives. Abby is the oldest of the three half-sisters, but the other two seem to be equally headstrong and each has her own strengths and weaknesses as well as some of their father's traits. Additionally, the chemistry between Cooper and Abby was undeniable. Still I could understand Cooper's desire to take things slowly, as he tried to protect his heart while waiting to see if she would run back to the city or adjust to life on the ranch.

Ranch life, misunderstandings, fear of commitment, PTSD, sisterly bonding, romance and love all play a part in this entertaining book. This story can be read as a standalone, but if you enjoy this tale, you may want to also check out the first in the series, LONG, HOT TEXAS SUMMER. I have been a fan of Ms. Brown's work for some time now and also enjoy her other series. Her witty, sexy cowboy novels are must reads! The latest in her BURNT BOOT series, THE TROUBLE WITH TEXAS COWBOYS, is due to release in January 2015.  In the meantime, be sure to pick up a copy of DAISIES IN THE CANYON. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did!
