John Tyree struggled during his teenage years and early twenties, trying to find his own place in life. A lifetime with a father who was loving but uncommunicative has left him angry and rebellious. When he joins the army after high school though, his life takes on many positive facets, including the beautiful Savannah Lynn Curtis.

After a tumultuous first meeting, when John rescued Savannah’s purse, they discover that they have met their soul mates. John is on leave from the army, visiting his father. He never expected to meet the gift that is Savannah. Through his years in the army, they share many letters, some heartbreak and sadness, but an optimism that as soon as John’s enlistment is up, they will be together forever. Then, tragedy strikes. 9/11 shakes the world and it shakes the very foundations of Savannah and John’s relationship. Change is in the air and it is a fragile and powerful thing that will leave both John and Savannah crushed in its wake.

DEAR JOHN is a book that had me crying from page one. Nicholas Sparks always manages to make me tear up, but perhaps this book more than some of his recent stories, touches a deep chord with me, as well as other readers. 9/11 is still an incredibly hard subject to handle, but I felt Mr. Sparks gave it the poignancy and strength it deserved. Through John and Savannah, you will see the immediacy of 9/11, the ripple-effect it has on their lives, and on the pages of the story. John is a three dimensional, tough character. His relationship with his father is just as emotional and heart wrenching as that of his relationship with Savannah. Your eyes will not come out of this story unscathed by tears, I guarantee it.

DEAR JOHN is the kind of tender love story that only Nicholas Sparks would have the talent to tackle. It is far from typical but it stands out because it is refreshing, resolute, and wholly topical to the issues citizens around the world face in the aftermath of 9/11. Patriotism and love collide in this gripping story.
