Elizabeth Lancaster is perfectly happy with her status-quo life.  She is a community college professor of Shakespeare studies who is almost finished with her classes for the summer.  Coming from a family of overachievers who are bent on helping her to improve her life, Elizabeth aches to fit in.

When her ex-husband, FX Fahey, shows up in her classroom and presents her with the opportunity to work as his creative director on a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Elizabeth intends to turn him down.  But the lure of making extra money to refurbish her old kitchen proves to be too great for Elizabeth to resist.

At her sisters’ request, Elizabeth hires a hunky house-sitter to look after her home while she is away.  When the two strike up a relationship via skype, things start to look up romantically for Elizabeth.  But will this romantic liaison be able to withstand a long distance relationship?

Elizabeth is a quirky, down to earth character who has a lot to learn about modern romance from Shakespeare.  It is amusing to watch Elizabeth as she navigates life’s choppy waters.

I found ELIZABETH THE FIRST WIFE to be a quick and pleasant read.  It is evident that Ms. Dolan has done her research on Shakespeare.  I enjoyed learning more about A Midsummer Night’s Dream and other Shakespearean works. Being a big fan of romance, I was a little disappointed that the love story between Elizabeth and her house-sitter took a backseat to the rest of the story. I would have liked to have seen a little more interaction between the pair of would be lovers.  A great storyline with realistic characters more than makes up for the lack of romance though.  For a fresh and modern take on Shakespeare, you should definitely give ELIZABETH THE FIRST WIFE a try!
