Jamie does not want anyone's pity. Although his injuries stem from being the sole survivor of an explosion in a Humvee while he served overseas as a soldier, he claims that he was hurt in a skiing accident as he leads her to believe he is a frivolous playboy. Knowing she will realize his lies if she sees his wounds and not wanting to see her disgust at his injuries, he refuses to remove his clothing. But he cannot deny his attraction to the lovely therapist. The chemistry between Jamie and Hallie is further enhanced when the two resident ghosts, matchmaking sisters, get involved. The two sisters, who lived at the estate before their deaths, were thwarted at love themselves while alive. Now they match up couples from beyond the grave. Will the issues thwarting Jamie and Hallie prevent them from finding happiness together, or will the ghosts succeed once more in their quest to unite soul mates?
Author Jude Deveraux has penned another winner with the third book in her NANTUCKET BRIDES series entitled EVER AFTER. Jamie and Hallie, who was named after one of the ghosts, are wonderful together and I also enjoyed most of the secondary characters, although I could never warm up to Hallie's stepsister. In my opinion, Shelly is a spoiled, spiteful and manipulative individual who is due for a comeuppance. Although her reasons for her behavior are explained as the story unfolds, I could never quite believe it. Still, this does not detract from the overall story, which kept me glued to the pages.
Ghosts, physical therapy, PTSD, sibling rivalry, betrayal, locked doors, secrets, surprising plot twists, startling illusions, family dynamics, healing, romance and true love are the mainstays of this delightfully captivating novel that is sure to enchant readers.
Since reading Ms. Deveraux's book KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR, my all-time favorite book, years ago, I have been a huge fan of her work. Her cleverly written, well-researched novels never disappoint. This novel, EVER AFTER, the third book in her NANTUCKET BRIDES series, is a delicious addition to an already amazing series. Each story in this series can be read as a standalone, but I found it impossible to stop at reading just one of the books. But why take my word for it; treat yourself to a copy and decide for yourself!
