Grant works construction and part time at the Leather and Lace lingerie shop. His ex-wife had divorced him and then been killed in a car accident, which left him alone to raise his young daughter, Cherie. Grant and Ally have been best friends for years, and they’d been through a lot together. Realizing he’s in love with Ally and acting on it could destroy their friendship.

Ally had been married and was now divorced. She works at Leather and Lace and lives above the store. Her divorce and inability to have children have left deep scars and insecurities. Ally has been in love with Grant for the longest time. She fantasizes of how it would be with him. Grant’s her best friend though, and she knows it can never happen, because he deserves somebody better. He deserves a whole woman, one that can give him more children.

Grant is an extremely dominant man. His dominance was the reason his ex-wife had left him. He’s itching to possess Ally, to let her know exactly how he feels. She’s unaware of his dominant tendencies however, and he’s afraid she’d look at him differently, and he’d lose his best friend. Ally knows she’s head over heels in love with Grant. She can’t look at him without wanting him. Ally’s convinced that she’s not good enough and Grant should be with somebody that could give him more children. Continuing their ritual of Friday night pizza and a movie with Cherie is the safest way for them to be together, until she kissed his cheek and then everything changed.

EVERY BEAT OF HER HEART is beautifully written. I loved that as I read I could sense the characters feelings and insecurities. Grant and Ally’s friendship is so close it’s easy to understand why taking the final step to become lovers would be so scary. The secrets they’d kept as well as their fears of rejection compounded their fears of admitting to their feelings. I was amused by Grant’s attempts at controlling himself when what he really wanted to do was paddle Ally’s behind. Ally wanted him to lose control and seemed to enjoy egging him into it. I absolutely adored the final straw when Ally went shopping for granny annie underpants, which she knew that Grant had forbidden, in an attempt to push him over his limits of control. Maggie Casper has combined a wondrous family story with very hot sex in EVERY BEAT OF HER HEART. This is definitely a book well worth reading over and over.
