Four months ago, Kinsey Taylor left her job and her family to move from San Francisco to Chicago to be with her fiancé David. They were supposed to wed a month ago, but after investing ten years in their relationship, and moving all that way to be with him, she discovers that he is cheating on her. Now she is working as an assistant press secretary in the mayor's office and has been given the assignment of cleaning up the reputation of the firehouse, starting with a fireman named Luke. Not only had he instigated a brawl involving half of his firehouse and quite a few of the Chicago police department, but he has refused to return three phone calls from her. Although she seeks him out in the firehouse gym, she never expects to see his just showered, tattooed body in nothing but a towel, or the way it makes her feel. After the bar fight became a You-tube sensation, Luke failed to make an appearance at a meeting at the courthouse. He should not even be at the firehouse, since technically he has been placed on pre-suspension administrative leave.

Luke is the second oldest of the Firefighting Dempseys, a family of foster siblings who have all followed their now deceased foster father into the service. When his foster father and foster brother died, it was Luke who came home from the Marines to take care of his younger siblings and keep the family together. He never regretted it and the siblings are a close, unified unit. Although none are related by blood, their close bond is strong enough to get them all assigned to the same firehouse. However, Luke's temper is quick to erupt, especially when he feels that one of his siblings is being threatened. After losing a sister when he was young, he is not about to lose another sibling. Although he is reputed to be one of the bravest and most decorated firefighters in the Chicago fire department, Luke has a temper. He was married once, but that union was destroyed when he came home to find his wife in bed with his friend, a Chicago police officer. This man was one of the reasons for the bar fight. But the last thing he expects is to be ordered to pose for a sexy firefighter's calendar in an attempt to clean up Engine 6's reputation, or to have the sexy Kinsey constantly around.

Although there is a strong attraction between Luke and Kinsey, both have been hurt in previous relationships. Kinsey only wants to concentrate on her career now and even when things turn intimate between her and Luke, she warns him that their sexual relationship is only to help them rebound from their past partners. But Luke finds himself falling for the feisty assistant press secretary and before long, he cannot imagine his life without her. How far will he go to win her over? Can he convince her they belong together, or will he lose the woman who means so much to him?

A scrumptious tale, FLIRTIING WITH FIRE, the first book in author Kate Meader's HOT IN CHICAGO series, is a sassy, smoking hot contemporary romance that heats up the pages. Readers will quickly find this book hard to put down. Luke and Kinsey are both competitive people, so whenever they are near each other the sparks fly. As much as I enjoyed the interaction between Luke and Kinsey, I was also intrigued by the relationships of his siblings and their possible love interests, as readers are given a glimpse of the possible connections to come in this delightful series. Also, the loyalty and camaraderie among these unusual siblings is heartwarming.

Kate Meader is a new-to-me author, but I loved this story so much, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this wonderful series entitled PLAYING WITH FIRE, which features Luke's sister Alexandra, another sassy female, touted as Chicago's Favorite Firefighter. Due out in May 2015, it is high on my 'must read' list. Treat yourself to a copy of FLIRTING WITH FIRE and check it out for yourself!
