This is the story of four friends and neighbors in their forties, who are each facing upheaval in their lives as they try to balance their careers and families. These women find they must come to terms with themselves before they can find happiness or successfully resume their roles as mothers, wives and friends. Although they are normally up with the sun and out power walking, their worlds are going through a metamorphosis, one they are trying very hard to survive and still keep their sanity intact.

Gerri, a Child Protective Services counselor, thought her life was ideal, other than the menopause, and she is the glue that holds everyone, including her friends, her three teenagers and her husband, together.  But when a secret is disclosed, her world as she knows it is blown apart. Will she be able to save her twenty-five year marriage and the life she has always known?

Teacher Andy’s marriage to a younger man, which started for all the wrong reasons, has broken up. Although she is not sad to see her husband go, she is lonely. Talking to the contractor who is renovating her kitchen helps her in ways she had not imagined, but he is not the type of man she goes for. Has she finally found the man meant for her, or is this quick rebound a mistake?

Sonja is deeply into New Age ideals and using them to come to the aid of her friends as well as her husband. She needs to believe that they are making a difference and helping her husband and friend improve their lives. However, at times, her friends believe she is too perfect. But when her husband can no longer put up with her ideas, he leaves her and the desertion sets Sonja off into a deep depression. With the help of her friends, can she save her sanity, or is her husband’s betrayal too much for her to handle?

BJ is new to the neighborhood, although she has spoken to the other women briefly in passing. Working for her brother, she spends her off-hours taking care of her two children. But BJ has a dark secret that keeps her from interacting with the neighborhood women, although she watches them closely. When her secret is disclosed, will she become an outcast in the neighborhood, or will the women come to her aid?

An uplifting tale, FOUR FRIENDS, the latest novel by New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr, is a clever and deeply satisfying read. I enjoyed getting to know these four women as they deal with life’s difficulties, always aware that they can rely on the friends as they pull together to help each other.

Dealing with menopause, homosexuality, teen dating, underage drinking, infidelity, domestic abuse, depression, friendship, marriage, secrets and love, this story is one you will not soon forget. I became a fan of Ms. Carr’s works after reading her VIRGIN RIVER series and now I cannot get enough. This story is just one more example of why Ms. Carr is a constant on my ‘must read’ list. Pick up a copy and discover Ms. Carr’s world for yourself!
