Carpenter's GIFT OF HAPPINESS has Katherine at its center and it isn't always pretty. Trying to live her own life by running away never solves anything or does it? Lucas Dalton, a business associate of her dad, has his own agenda - in his life and in his business dealings. He lives with his older sister and a housekeeper and they become like family to Kate. Watching the family dynamics whether Kate's or Lucas' was spellbinding at times. Seeing the chemistry between Lucas and Kate was eye opening especially since he was always trying to be the knight in shining armor and do what he thought best for her. The interactions between Kate and Lucas' family was heartwarming since she had never been part of such a loving family even when growing up. Getting a life that she created and begins to enjoy of course has to be derailed. There was family, tears, sadness, fear, anger, violence, happiness and laughter along with romance and love despite the difference in age between Kate and Lucas. There was nice closure after lots of twists and turns to the story and a happily ever after in the offing. The story ended too abruptly though since I didn't realize I was at the end until I turned the last page in my Nook and came to the page, About the Author. I actually looked back to make sure I didn't miss some pages! All in all an enjoyable read.
Carpenter is a pseudonym for Thea Harrison and while I've enjoyed romance books by Carpenter I have not read books by Harrison who writes urban fantasies and also about alternate universes. I look forward to reading more books by Carpenter since romances are my favorite genre.
