Lil seems to have the dream job for a book addict; she works in a small Manhattan bookstore for a kind, generous boss. In reality, Lil leads a very lonely life residing in a small apartment in the Garment District in New York City. She is an old woman who was once a beautiful fairy. She still has her wings that she must bind and hide every day.

Lil was tossed out of her lovely fairy world when she was not able to send Cinderella to the ball to meet the prince and fulfill her destiny. Lil did not just fail at this task, but let her emotions have free reign and fell under the spell of the Prince and his charm. She became human and attended the ball in Cinderella’s stead. Instead of everything reverting to its previous state at midnight. Lil was claimed in a flurry of wings by other fairies and banished to the human, anonymous world of New York.

Signs and symbols seem to show that Lil will finally have a chance to make things right and redeem herself. If she can just pair up her boss, George, and her young friend ,Veronica, Lil believes she will be able to go back to the fairy world and her former glory.

Ms. Turgeon’s Cinderella story is not the Disney version, but one that is darker with palpable yearning and regret. The past and present are deftly woven together as Lil slowly reveals her life as a fairy godmother. Most of the narrative is told in internal monologue from the first person point of view, which works perfectly. The lush, vivid descriptions add to the magical element.

GODMOTHER is a story that questions if redemption is really possible and if love can change your life forever. Ms. Turgeon has spun an enchanting web with this novel. She is currently working on a book about the Little Mermaid.
