Olivia McElroy sits next to her husband James as he lies in a hospital bed. She suddenly remembers the first time she fell in love with James when they were seniors in high school and each other’s first loves. Olivia assumes they would go off to college together, get married and live happily ever after. But that is not meant to be. James must leave Olivia with no reason. He must go off to Ireland to work at one of his father’s companies. He doesn’t approve of James and Olivia’s relationship, and if James doesn’t do what he is told, he will fire Olivia’s father from his factory.

James never tells Olivia why he has left, and now she is in quite a bind because she is pregnant with James’s baby. Instead of giving away her baby for adoption, Olivia graduates high school and gets a job at a restaurant where she eventually ends up marrying the manager, Alex. Alex becomes a good husband and father to her son, Kyle. As the years go by, Olivia can’t help but keep James in her thoughts and wonder if she will ever see him again.

James always thinks of Olivia and wants to be with her, but he can’t because of his father. When his father passes away, James goes to Olivia, but of course she is married and won’t give up her life. As these two go their separate ways again, they can’t help but feel the need to be with each other. How will Olivia tell James about their son, and can she end her marriage to the one man who stood by her through all the heartache and loss?

Stella MacLean has written a tender tale of young love and regret. From the moment I was introduced to James and Olivia, I knew these two lovers were soul mates and were meant to be. You get a good sense of the loss of love and years of silent suffering these two had to endure because of one selfish individual.

HEART OF MY HEART spans of forty years, and James and Olivia are two people who try to go on with their separate lives but always have the thought of each other in the back of their minds. The eventual reunion of these two is very warm and hopeful and you hope that they can be together the way they should have been when they were teens. If you like a subtle yet emotional read, HEART OF MY HEART is a good one to pick up.
