When Tracy Potter's husband, Glenn, dies suddenly she knows life will never be the same. Not only does she have to deal with her grief, but she has to find a way to support her son and stepdaughter. Glenn has left them almost destitute and has hidden some devastating secrets. The one thing Tracy still owns is the Heartbreak Hotel, an inn her grandparents left her. It has been vacant for ages, but Tracy hopes that remodeling it and its location on the Pacific coast will mean a steady income for her and her family.

Tracy's first guest arrives before the inn is officially open for business. He registers as Wade Johnson, but that is an alias he is using to escape from the notoriety caused by a book he wrote. He has truly hit bottom emotionally, but wonders if Tracy and the inn with its past secrets can renew his will to live.

Tracy is a strong heroine and one to be greatly admired as she faces struggles and decisions you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. As the layers of Wade's personality and background are revealed, the reader has great respect for him as a man of integrity and sensitivity. Both main characters have crushing loads of emotional baggage, so it is understandable that neither one wants to risk another heartbreak.

HEARTBREAK HOTEL has everything a romance reader could ask for: sizzling love scenes, captivating characters and even a ghost story worked into the plot. Although this is the third book in a trilogy, it stands well on its own. One of the main characters from an earlier book has a minor role in this novel. I would highly recommend you read the two previous books, HEAT WAVE and LOVER'S LANE to experience all the magic of Twilight Cove. HEARTBREAK HOTEL is a fitting finale to the trilogy with its story of second chances and forgiveness. I look forward to another terrific tale from Ms. Landis in the future.
