Emily Dugan has it all. She’s the successful leader of an advertising team, living with her perfect boyfriend in a great condo in New York City. Oh wait, that was yesterday. Today Emily is unemployed, single and homeless and she isn’t feeling very healthy, either. She’s been downsized out of her advertising job and while she waited at the airport for a plane to Los Angeles, her boyfriend stopped by the terminal to dump her for another woman and kick her out of their apartment. Can her life get any worse?
Emily’s grandmother owns a cooking school in Los Angeles and lives in a house on the school grounds. Emily expects to find Grandy waiting for her when she arrives in LA, but instead she finds a gorgeous arson investigator from the LAFD. He’s looking into a series of suspicious small fires at Grandy’s school and her grandmother is in the hospital after suffering minor injuries in the latest fire at her school. This isn’t helping Emily’s roiling stomach or pounding head and she promptly faints at the investigator’s feet!
Drew Perry is no knight charging to the rescue of damsels in distress but he finds himself taking Emily to the hospital and waiting to see how she’s doing. Emily discovers that her life can indeed get worse – she’s pregnant! When Emily gets the news, Drew offers to take her home and help her out until her grandmother is out of the hospital. The last thing Emily wants is to depend on anyone, least of all a man like Drew. Emily is always getting into relationships with the wrong guys and she doesn’t need any temptation. She’s sworn off men but she can’t seem to ignore the heat that fills her when Drew is near.
Drew is happily single and plans to stay that way. Period. He’s a third generation firefighter who lost both parents at an early age. He doesn’t want to put a family through that and he doesn’t want to give up the job he loves. Emily might be gorgeous, intelligent, spunky and cute but she’s also pregnant by another man. Even if he were interested in a relationship – and he definitely is NOT - that alone should be enough to keep Emily off-limits! But Drew can’t deny his attraction to her any more than Emily can ignore her deepening feelings for Drew. What’s happening to the man who has always avoided emotional entanglements at all costs?
Emily and Drew have plenty of reasons, both real and imagined, to steer clear of romantic entanglements. Drew lost his parents at an early age and as a result is afraid of relationships. Emily is afraid of them for a different reason: experience. Add in the fact that Emily is pregnant and lives clear across the country and the reasons why they shouldn’t get involved just keep mounting. I loved watching the attraction between them grow hotter and hotter in spite of everything. The continually growing respect and admiration between Drew and Emily as they worked together to investigate the fires made the story even more enjoyable. And there’s no shortage of sizzling scenes! HEAT WAVE is the second installment in Jamie Denton’s Some Like It Hot trilogy. I’m ready for the third!
