Blindsided and grieving, Carley flounders.   For the sake of her children, she forces herself to push through her pain and move forward, only to be hit with a second blow.  They’re broke.  As a stay-at-home mom who has never held a serious job, she’s not sure she has any marketable skills. Carley falters until she comes up with the idea of turning her beautiful home into a bed and breakfast.  But not everyone is sure that plan is quite proper – including her loving but prim mother-in-law.  Determined to take care of her family, Carley carries on with her plans and soon begins to believe she can flourish on her own.

About nine months after her husband’s death, Carley realizes she is being courted by longtime family friend Wyatt.  Overcome by misgivings about starting a new relationship, Carley is hesitant to let Wyatt get too close, or to let herself go too far.  The constant struggle between what she wants and what is deemed proper in her small, judgmental community weighs heavily on Carley.  But by the end of the summer, she and her friends face catastrophe that pushes all of them to their limits.

Wyatt was Gus’s best friend and will eventually take over the Winstead law firm.  His loyalty and friendship with Gus kept him from admitting his feelings for Carley since they were introduced.  At first, Wyatt offers to help Carley out with her daughters, her new business venture and her in-laws out of his sense of duty to Gus.  However, as the months pass and Carley grows more confident and stronger than ever, Wyatt comes to accept that his feelings for her will not diminish.

Set on the idyllic island of Nantucket, HEAT WAVE is a skillful and lyrical tale of one woman’s journey to reinvent herself after her life is turned upside down.  Carley relies on her friends and family, but ultimately the choices she makes are deeply personal.

Incredibly touching and full of real emotion, HEAT WAVE is an absolutely super summer read.  Nancy Thayer writes true characters and realistic but still unexpected plot twists that are engaging and make this book almost impossible to put down.  I cannot wait to read more by this very talented author.
