Noah only knows about army life, but with his career cut short, he comes home to help his brother run the Lazy L Ranch. It's summer vacation, and Lily is at loose ends, leaving her without an excuse not to help care for Noah. Noah doesn't want her help or anyone else for that matter. He came home to heal from wounds sustained during combat. At first, he resents Lily coming to help but his feelings change the more time they spend together. Although his feelings begin to soften, he knows he must keep his distance. The wounds he sustained during his tour left him missing an arm, but that isn't all he has to deal with. He simply can't seem to forgive himself for letting down his unit.

Noah's brother, Andrew, is getting married to Lily's good friend, Jen. When Noah is asked to be the best man, he wants to refuse, but finds he can't say no to his brother. Lily is also asked to plan the wedding and to be the maid of honor. Agreeing is the last thing she wants to do, but the bride is her best friend. Lily finds that not only has she consented to help with the wedding, she also finds herself making the wedding dress. However, terrible, painful memories of the past resurface and need reconciling, before she finds true happiness. What about the wedding dress hanging in her closet? Can Lily confront the demons of her past and lay things to rest or will they destroy her?

HER LONE COWBOY is a wonderful novel written by Donna Alward. This touching tale will keep you turning the pages late into the night with the anticipation of what happens next. Donna skillfully executes this story by dealing with issues that are true in today’s world. In this novel, Donna relates the sad truth about wounded soldiers coming home. She also provides some insight about how returning soldiers handle life when the circumstances drastically alter theirs. You discover that Lily is a strong woman, but she’s tasted life and love in the wrong places. Reading this delightful story made me wonder if these two will ever find the peace and love, they so deserve or will they continue to be victims of the past. HER LONE COWBOY is a perfect read for those cool summer nights.
