James' HILLBILLY ROCKSTAR, BOOK 6 in the BLACKTOP COWBOYS SERIES, was not at all what I expected and was oftentimes out of my comfort zone. There was a lot of loving and romance along with some mystery and intrigue on who was out to get Devin whom I took an instant dislike to - him and his groupies - but he slowly wormed his way into my heart as we got to know the real man and what made him tick. Liberty was a kick from the beginning and she didn't know which person to be when - bodyguard, lover, personal assistant, friend. Watching their interactions was funny, sad, pulled at my heartstrings and combustible. They burned up the sheets and a whole lot more. Their chemistry was immediate even though they disliked each other on sight but given their work relationship that turned into much more there was a lot of stress. Trying to keep their various relationships from the other band members was often difficult and they would try to pull back which one or the other took the wrong way. There were family and friends, estrangements, secrets, hidden agendas, mean-spiritedness, laughter, tears, lots of travel, both luxury and normal accommodations, arguments, taking the high road, making up and friendships formed. There was a happily ever after that was better than expected. The epilogue was great in tying up the storyline but I still wanted more especially since they became such a great couple that had a new and different life to look forward to.
James is an author I've previously read but I always see to read her books out of order. I need to go back and fill in some gaps so I can get the flow of her various series. I especially need to go back and read the first five books in this series.
