Jolene Zakardes is a woman damaged by years of neglectful parents.  She finally finds a family she can rely on when she joins the Army Reserves as a helicopter pilot.  She marries the love of her life, Michael, and they have two loving daughters.  And if her husband works too much and doesn’t like her reservist friends, well, Jolene is willing to overlook the shortcomings in her marriage.

Then comes the day when Jolene and her best friend, Tami, are called into active duty.  They must leave their families and serve their country in Iraq.  Devastated by the news, Jo’s children act out in confusion and fear and Michael says horrible things he can’t take back before Jolene leaves. What follows is the story of both Jolene and Michael – dealing with their new realities and trying to salvage their marriage from an impossible distance.

Kristin Hannah has written, hands down, the best book I have read in a very long time.  Her incredible insight into the hearts and minds of her characters lends believability to a horrifying and heartbreaking story.  Jolene and Michael are flawed, damaged by their circumstances, and Ms. Hannah doesn’t sugar coat or shy away from the harsh realities these people face.

Do not read this book without tissues nearby, and don’t expect to get much done until you have completed the novel.
