INTENSIVE CARE introduces us to Kate who is an ICU nurse but needs a change of scenery - both her location and her job - with all that's going on in her life. There's heartache and love along with lots of characters whom we get to know and not just on the surface. A contemporary romance with medical jargon and hospitals at its core it didn't take me long to feel a part of the action.

Edwards' INTENSIVE CARE has characters who are multifaceted with issues and problems to deal with. Kate has been in a long term relationship with her successful lawyer boyfriend, Marcus, but she's more all in than he is. She's always jumping to do his bidding and she never seems to be good enough in his eyes although it takes a while for her to open her own eyes to what's going on around her. He seems to rip her heart out more than once before Kate reaches her limit and decides to do something about it and still it never ends. For someone who always thinks her actions through Kate starts making quick decisions about her life and immediately acts on those decisions. There were friends and family, hurts, illness, secrets, wariness, doubts, heartache, tears, happiness, laughter, support, romance and love. Joel and Kate click immediately even before they meet and their relationship/friendship doesn't always move forward. Watching their chemistry and awareness of each other grow was heartwarming and made me sigh. Seeing them open up to each other about their pasts, their hurts and fears and go from friendship to more was nice to see. There was closure especially with the epilogue and there's a happily ever after in the offing.

Edwards is a new author and I look forward to reading other books she writes. EMERGENCY RESPONSE is the follow-up book to INTENSIVE CARE and I can't wait to read it and be reunited with Kate, Joel, Emma and their families but also the nurses and doctors at Birrangulla Base Hospital.
