Rick made the fatal error of telling his good friend Jesse about a woman he met in a local bar and how attracted to her he felt. Not once did he think that Jesse would purposely set out to seduce Blair, but that’s exactly what happened. Hurt and dejected Rick ended their friendship and that was without knowing the full scope of Jesse’s betrayal.
Blair had been rebelling against her parents’ high society plans for her future when she first met Rick in the bar. He’d been unlike anyone she’d met before – sweet, shy and incredibly considerate, not to mention gorgeous. It was only because of him that she visited the bar the next night – and made the mistake of going home with Jesse.
It’s been six months since Jesse and Blair started dating. She’s seen his true colors and dumped him several months ago but that doesn’t seem to stop Jesse from acting as if he owns her. When her friends ditch her at the harvest festival the moment Jesse shows up Blair’s disheartened but not too worried. After seeing and exchanging greetings with Rick, Jesse snidely informs her that he’d lied to her when they first got together and Rick had really wanted her for himself. She’s devastated by his callousness and what it’s cost her. The ensuing heated discussion between Jesse and Blair garners Rick’s attention and he comes to her rescue. Grateful for the timely intervention Blair finally gets an opportunity to be with Rick and she’s surprised at how comfortable and safe she feels with him. By the time they finish touring the festival Blair’s ready for some alone time with Rick – preferably naked. Rick is just thankful he finally has the opportunity he’s been looking for – to claim Blair for himself. For Rick there’s something infinitely sweet about stealing Jesse’s girl, but as Blair is quick to point out – she was Rick’s girl first!
I’ve always had a fondness for the Rick Springfield song JESSE’S GIRL and the emotional appeal it evoked. Thanks to Karen Erickson’s writing we now have a positive outcome to Rick’s longing for his best friend’s girlfriend. Jesse’s obviously got some severe jealousy issues as well as a fondness for alcohol that ultimately destroys his relationship with Blair – and I really couldn’t feel any empathy for him. Rick is perfect. He’s gentle, caring, sexy and has all the right moves in the bedroom – or anywhere else for that matter. Blair made a mistake but she’s grown and matured over the time since she met Rick and is ready for a life with him. JESSE’S GIRL is a sexually charged fun tribute to an old 80’s song which still brings a smile to my face.
