Jesse Bell Holt learned how to use her body to get what she wants at age eighteen.  Her mother teaches her that sexual enticements will take her far in life.  Jesse’s minister father is oblivious to the scheming women in his household, but the townsfolk of Maysville, Georgia know of Jesse’s exploits including a miscarriage and abortion.  When a handsome young preacher, Traynor Devereaux, comes to their home for dinner, Jesse recognizes a way out of town.  She sets out to entice the young man to do her bidding, and soon it is wedding bells for the couple despite the warnings Traynor’s father and aunt pronounce.

Traynor is a preacher’s son as well, and when his father is unable to host the tent revival in Mayville he fills in.  He is completely smitten with the beautiful Jesse and believes she will make the perfect minister’s wife.  Will he be disillusioned when he discovers his fame and fortune are results of her sexual machinations?

JEZEBEL is a powerful story of one woman’s cunning and deceit to get what she wants, no matter the consequences.  She is immune to other people’s feelings and has no qualms about using and abusing them for her personal gain.  I had some very strong feelings for Jesse’s character and was enthralled to the end to see how she would be punished or rewarded for her deeds.  Traynor is a strong and vibrant character; dynamic in his preaching yet a little clueless to Jesse’s behaviors in the beginning.  I found JEZEBEL to be a compelling story of one woman’s triumphs, tragedy, and redemption.  This may make some readers take a good hard look at their behaviors and make a change for the better.  Very well done, Ms Thomas.
