As Mike Furie’s personal assistant, Jillian might be paid extremely well and have all the benefits any girl could ever want. That doesn’t mean she has to put up with her boss’s expectations that she be at his beck and call every single minute of the day. It’s time to quit! Unfortunately before she can deliver that news and inform him of what a complete jerk he is, she has to fly to Aspen, on her birthday weekend, to rescue him from yet another woman hoping to sink her claws into him … and his money. Jillian wants more from life – free time, a man who loves her, lots of down and dirty sex – all those normal desires that many women take for granted.
As a wealthy bachelor Mike Furie is used to getting exactly what he wants, when he wants it and sees no reason why his personal assistant shouldn’t fit into that category as well. If he requires rescuing from some overly amorous woman then it’s acceptable that he request Jillian’s help, isn’t it? It doesn’t matter that she has to fly all the way out to Aspen to do so, that’s just part of the job. However, this time he gets far more than he bargained for because his efficient assistant is obviously extremely angry and dressed to the nines – complete with an engagement ring.
Mike’s expectations that Jillian be dressed for black tie when she arrives at his home in Aspen is the perfect opportunity to get a little pay back. After all, if she’s expected to be exquisitely dressed she has to have jewelry that compliments her Dior dress – and if she has to fend off yet another desperate woman then what better way to do it than with an extremely expensive engagement ring. If Mike wants rescuing, he can darn well pay for it – and her little shopping spree is just the perfect combination good-bye/birthday gift. She can’t just up and quit in front of all his guests so she bides her time and plays along as his sweet little biddable fiancé following a soul searing kiss that totally rocked her world. During the course of the evening Jillian drinks a little too much champagne and while she does inform Mike of what an ass he is and that she intends to quit, she still can’t deny her desire for him. What she doesn’t expect is to wake up naked with him in a hotel room in Lake Tahoe – married!
Fran Lee’s JILLIAN’S JOB is a sinfully delightful read. As a professional you’re expected to do your job but there’s always a point where you just have to say I’ve had enough – and Jillian’s hit that point. However, being in love with Mike complicates the whole situation, especially once alcohol becomes involved. When this story starts you can tell Jillian’s genuinely hurt by Mike’s overbearing treatment but as the story progresses you see him as she sees him. His generosity, caring, passions, and even his vulnerabilities are all evident in how he responds to Jillian, but that would be difficult for her to see since she’s so close and has been for seven years. Fran Lee takes the employee/boss romance out of the office and gives readers a more personal look at the emotional upheaval such a change in relationship would cause – and the results are highly memorable.
