More than two decades ago, Barney Davidson sent his beloved wife, Vicky, their two sons and daughter to America believing a lie.  He never stopped loving or needing them, even though he found a different kind of love with Lucy, and had a daughter with her.  A few short years after he sent them away, he died longing for the family he’d treasured.

In the spring of 1954, Lucy is a woman of sixty, dealing with the pain of aging, and the pain of the secret she’s kept for so long.  Surrounded as she is by her daughter, Mary, and longtime companion Adam, her thoughts keep returning to the past.  She thinks of Barney, his wife and children, and her own son, Jamie, murdered at the age of two by his father.  Although Barney has been gone for twenty years, and Jamie longer, she still loves each whole-heartedly.  She also hurts for Vicky and her children, and grows more certain that they should know the truth of Barney’s betrayal.

Adam warns that the revelation could cause more hurt to Barney’s family, instead of the closure Lucy imagines for them.  She also decides to return to the town they’d all lived in, and visit the grave of her young son Jamie.  Thus the wheels are set in motion for Vicky’s return to England, and the return of a madman into Lucy’s life.

This is an engaging tale of enduring love and loss.  The love triangles of Barney, Vicky, Lucy, and Adam are heart wrenching, as are the reactions to Barney’s secret.  The characters are complex and well developed, and the story will keep you turning pages through the end.  I thoroughly enjoyed JOURNEY’S END, and look forward to more of Ms. Cox’s novels.
